Cream Blush vs Powder Blush

Thursday, 28 November 2013

Of course the answer is yay but, in my opinion, not always. I have plenty of cream blushes at home and love them – they make my cheeks look dewy and give that touch of colour but I am finding more and more so that they have a lot of restrictions when using them and don’t allow me to achieve exactly what I want.

Having said that, they definitely do have their time and place: they are the perfect product to pack for a chilled wkd away when you will be wearing minimal make up and just wants that au natural look. They also can double up as a lip tint so means it’s quite a multi-tasker. Below are some of my favourites:
Stila Convertible Colour in Peony (buy here), Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pretty Powerful, NARS Multiple in Orgasm (Got mine at Space NK - here) and Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Powder Pink
Oh and Shu Uemura (and old favourite brand that I love) have just launched this one. It is very high on my wishlist, despite my little point of view here:

And now for the reasons why my powder blushes win, by far:

The pigment
I have found most cream blushes to lack pigment. All fine when you apply them, but come midday they’ve disappeared into my skin. I like rosey cheeks. My powder blushes win hands down.

The blending
I don’t like the feeling of blending these into my cheeks. I feel like I am rubbing my foundation off. Having said that, patting them on with the ball of my hand works well and gives a beautiful rosey touch. However, being too heavy handed with cream blushes will, most definitely, leave you looking like a clown. You have been warned.

Below is a video on how best to apply cream blushes:
The dewiness
This is obviously one fo the biggest pro’s, but also flaws – I think. The dewiness and wet-texture of this product means you will glow, but it also means applying any bronzer or face powder over it will get stuck to this area. It’s essentially like rubbing lipstick onto your cheeks and then applying a powder. Result = no more glow, and very patchy looking cheeks. Not-so-pretty.

Lastly, as you may have guessed, I am a powder blush junkie. You can never have too many of these. Below are some of my (many) favourites. In my mind a good blush completes any make up look.
Stila Custom Colour Blush in Self-Adjusting Pink (buy here), Smashbox Love Me Blush (buy here), Lancôme Love Me Blush (Edgars) and NARS Angelika Blush (I got it at Space NK – here)
